Mubi has acquired worldwide rights to two Spanish series from Movistar Plus International, the overseas distribution arm of Spain's largest pay TV and streaming operator. The deal covers "La Mesías," from directing duo Los Javis, and "Riot Police," the first premium television series from director Rodrigo Sorogoyen.
The agreement, reported by Variety, marks a significant push by Movistar Plus to expand its original programming beyond Spanish-speaking markets. Mubi, a global streaming platform known for curated arthouse and independent film, will handle distribution across all territories outside Spain.
"La Mesías" comes from Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, known collectively as Los Javis, who previously created "La Bola Negra." The series has drawn attention on the international festival circuit for its unflinching look at family, faith and celebrity culture.
"Riot Police" represents Sorogoyen's first foray into episodic television. The director is best known for the film "The Beloved" and has built a reputation for tense, morally complex thrillers. The series follows a group of riot officers navigating professional and personal crises in Madrid.
Beyond the Mubi deal, Movistar Plus International has closed distribution agreements for several other titles. "The Anatomy of a Moment," a four-part series from director Alberto Rodríguez, was nominated for an International Emmy on Sept. 23. The show, based on Javier Cercas' book about a failed 1981 coup attempt in Spain, has already rolled out in additional European territories.
Other titles in the distribution slate include "Querer," "The New Years" and "The Nameless." The breadth of the package signals Movistar Plus' ambition to position itself as a major supplier of premium European content at a time when global streamers are aggressively acquiring non-English-language series.
Spain has become an increasingly important source of international television hits. Netflix's "Money Heist" and "Elite" demonstrated global appetite for Spanish-language programming, and platforms including HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video have since invested heavily in Spanish originals.
For Mubi, the deal adds scripted television to a catalog traditionally built around feature films. The platform has expanded into series in recent years as it competes for subscribers in a crowded streaming market.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Movistar Plus International has not announced release dates for the series on Mubi's platform.
