Barbershop' Series Lands on Amazon Prime Video With February Premiere Date

Amazon Prime Video will premiere its "Barbershop" comedy series on Feb. 10, the streamer announced Tuesday alongside two first-look images of the cast.

All eight episodes will drop at once, continuing a film franchise that began with the 2002 hit starring Ice Cube. Jermaine Fowler leads the new series as Travis "Trav" Walker.

The show follows Trav as he returns to Chicago hoping to honor his grandfather's legacy at the iconic Calvin's barbershop. But according to the official logline, "the shop has changed, and so has the city."

"As Trav struggles to find his place among a new crew of barbers and loyal customers, Calvin's remains what it's always been," the logline reads, "a place for sharp fades, sharp opinions, and a community that always has something to say."

The original "Barbershop" film grossed $77 million domestically and spawned a 2004 sequel, "Barbershop 2: Back in Business," plus the 2016 spinoff "Barbershop: The Next Cut." A short-lived TV series, "The Barbershop," aired on Showtime in 2005.

Fowler is best known for creating and starring in the sitcom "Superior Donuts" and for roles in "Coming 2 America" and "Sorry to Bother You."

The announcement comes as streamers lean harder into familiar intellectual property to draw subscribers. Amazon has found success reviving film franchises for television, including its "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" series and the upcoming "Legally Blonde" prequel.

Amazon did not release additional casting details beyond the first-look photos. The streamer also has not said whether the series will set up future seasons or serve as a limited run.

The February date places the premiere during a crowded month for streaming releases, ahead of the spring television window. Amazon has not announced a marketing campaign or trailer debut date.

Fans of the franchise will see whether the barbershop's signature mix of humor and community commentary translates to a binge-release format. The first-look images show Fowler in character inside a barbershop setting, though Amazon has not shared plot details beyond the logline.
