Influential Pastor John MacArthur Dies at 86 After Health Battle
John MacArthur, a prominent evangelical pastor and longtime leader of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, died on July 14, 2025, at the age of 86. He succumbed to complications from pneumonia following a series of heart and lung surgeries over the past two years, according to church officials.
MacArthur served as the pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church for more than five decades, beginning his ministry there in 1969. He was widely known for his expository preaching style, authoring over 150 books and commentaries, and founding the globally broadcast Grace to You ministry.
In recent years, MacArthur’s health had declined significantly. After undergoing complex procedures for atrial fibrillation and an aorta replacement starting in 2023, he was hospitalized in July 2025 with pneumonia. The church shared that despite medical efforts, his condition worsened rapidly, leading to his passing surrounded by family.
MacArthur’s theological influence was substantial within evangelical circles. He was a staunch Calvinist, advocate of cessationism, and defender of complementarianism. His church gained national attention during the COVID-19 pandemic for legally challenging restrictions on religious gatherings.
While revered by many for his deep scriptural teaching, MacArthur was also a controversial figure. Critics pointed to his firm stances on issues such as feminism, LGBTQ rights, and critical race theory, as well as past criticisms regarding church governance.
Following the announcement of his death, tributes poured in from followers, fellow pastors, and religious organizations worldwide, reflecting on his lifelong dedication to preaching and pastoral leadership.
John MacArthur is survived by his wife Patricia, four children, 15 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Grace Community Church plans to hold a memorial service in the coming days to honor his legacy.
