OpenAI launched a shared workspace inside ChatGPT on Tuesday, a direct move into the workplace software market long dominated by its partner Microsoft.
The feature, called Space, lets co-workers collaborate with the chatbot and with AI agents OpenAI calls Dots, which can carry out tasks on a user's behalf. CEO Sam Altman announced it at the company's DevDay developer conference in San Francisco.
"Your pages and files all live together in Space, like they would in a drive," Altman said during the presentation. "But spaces feel alive."
Altman said users can give a page specific instructions, such as checking a team channel and updating the page with what it finds. The company announced several other ChatGPT features aimed at office workers at the same event.
The launch puts OpenAI on a collision course with Microsoft, which has been its closest partner and largest investor since the lab's early days. Microsoft 365 and its Copilot AI tools generate billions in annual revenue for the Redmond, Washington, company.
OpenAI has increasingly pushed into that territory. The two companies renegotiated their partnership terms in recent months as OpenAI restructured its corporate form and pursued outside computing deals. Microsoft, meanwhile, has built its own AI models and reduced reliance on OpenAI technology in some products.
Tuesday's announcement signals OpenAI intends to compete for the same corporate customers Microsoft has served for decades. The Dots agents add another layer: they can act independently on tasks, a function that overlaps with Microsoft's own agent push.
OpenAI did not announce pricing or a general availability date for Space. The company has been under pressure to convert ChatGPT's massive free user base into paying enterprise customers as it spends heavily on data centers and chips.
Microsoft declined to comment on the announcement, according to reports. OpenAI did not immediately respond to questions about how Space will be priced or when it will reach all users.
The DevDay conference continues Tuesday with additional sessions on developer tools and APIs.
