God of War Laufey hits PlayStation on Feb. 16, 2027, Sony's Santa Monica Studio announced Tuesday. Preorders opened the same day.
The game is a prequel in the action-adventure franchise and puts Laufey, also known as Faye, in the lead role. She is the mother of Atreus and the late wife of Kratos, the series' longtime protagonist.
The story follows Laufey beyond death through the Everywhen, described as the afterlife of the gods. That setting marks a departure from the Norse realms players explored in God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok (2022).
Players who preorder receive a special armor set, a cosmetic appearance and an in-game resource pack. Sony did not say whether those items will be sold separately after launch.
The announcement lands roughly four years after Ragnarok, which closed out the Norse saga and sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. Sony has not confirmed a PC version or a release date outside the PlayStation platform.
Faye appeared in both recent God of War titles but largely through flashbacks and Kratos' memories. Her death before the events of the 2018 game drives much of the story, and her hidden past becomes a major plot point in Ragnarok.
Santa Monica Studio has not shown gameplay footage. The studio also has not named a director for the project or confirmed whether Christopher Judge and other cast members from the Norse duology will return.
The preorder window runs about five months before launch. That is a shorter runway than Sony gave Ragnarok, which was announced in 2020 and delayed into 2022.
God of War Laufey arrives in a crowded early-2027 window. Sony has not yet detailed its full release slate for the year, and the company has leaned on established franchises to sell consoles as PlayStation 5 enters the back half of its life cycle.
